š§³ Didnāt Plan for Ryeāand Thatās Why It Was Perfect
I hadnāt planned on going to Rye. No itinerary, no checklist. Just a last-minute āwhy notā and a train ticket from London. I didnāt expect muchāand maybe thatās why it completely caught me off guard.

A Village That Looks Like a Painting
I had originally wanted to visit Cotswolds, but time was tight, and Rye was closer. Cobblestone streets, crooked medieval rooftops, pastel shutters, and layered hilltop housesāRye looked like a picture someone painted of their idea of āBritish countryside charm.ā
There were no big crowds, just quiet shops on the high street, patches of grass leading up to castle ruins, and a view that made me stop walking for a moment. The only thing I missed? Spotting one of the sheep I secretly hoped to see.

How to Get There (Easy!)
Ā·š From London St Pancras International, take a train to Ashford International
Ā·š¤ļø Switch to a local line for Rye
Ā·ā±ļø The whole trip takes about 1.5 hours
Ā
Where I Ate (Highly Recommend)
Ā·Lunch: The George in Rye ā classic pub on High Street. Steak and burger were both great. (Skip the oysters though.)
Ā·Tea: The Cobbles Tea Room ā cozy, affordable, and the scone set came with so much cream and jam it felt like a gift.

What I Carried (Glad I Did)
Even with no plan, I brought my go-to lightweight waterproof backpack. Small enough not to feel like ātravel gear,ā but spacious enough to hold:
Ā·My camera
Ā·A folded windbreaker
Ā·Snacks
Ā·Water bottle
Ā·Book
Ā·And later⦠a few things I didnāt expect to buy
It kept everything dry when the sky turned grey, and light enough that I barely noticed it on the walk to the castle fields.
Ā
No Big Adventure. Just a Perfect Small One.
If youāre ever in London and need to get out of the cityābut not too farāRye might be the answer. You donāt need much time. You donāt need a plan. Just a train ticket, a bit of curiosity, and a backpack that wonāt get soaked if the weather shifts.

The lightweight waterproof backpack
I carried on this trip kept everything dry, felt barely there, and still had room for unexpected extras. Itās become my default bag for train-day escapes like this.
