What Most Tourists Miss Just 15 Minutes North of Copenhagen

Naerum isn’t on most people’s Copenhagen itinerary.
But just 15 minutes from the city by E-tog train, it feels like a different world—lakeside woods, grassy hills, and quiet cabins peeking through trees.

I came here with no expectations—just a need for quiet. Tucked my camera, water bottle, and scarf into my expandable backpack for travel, and took the path toward Naerum Lake.
Locals call this place their “backyard forest.”
But it felt more like a forgotten sketch of Denmark: light bouncing off the lake, geese gliding by, a bench in the grass where you could sit for hours.
There’s no official hiking trail here. Just natural paths underfoot, a few families walking, and moments where the city feels far away.
My 20L expandable daypack was just enough. Rain-resistant, foldable, and light—I barely noticed it while wandering, but it carried everything I needed to stay a little longer.
This isn’t about escaping the city. It’s about pausing inside it.
Slowing down in a place where nature and daily life overlap.
If you’re in Copenhagen and looking for a peaceful walk that doesn’t feel curated, head north.
Naerum is the kind of place you find, and immediately want to keep to yourself.
