What I Ate in Tenerife (And Why I’d Fly Back Just for That Octopus)

Tenerife is full of surprises. Last time I was here, I chased lava trails and stargazed from volcanoes. This time? I followed my nose.
Just four hours from London, this island has more than beaches and sunsets. Between small family-run kitchens and smoky seafood grills, these five meals stayed with me long after I left.

1.Restaurante Galeón: The first stop, and still the best octopus
We drove into Garachico hungry and left stunned. This place books out fast, and for good reason. Their grilled octopus was tender and charred just right. I’d fly back just for that. The squid-ink seafood rice was rich, and the grilled whole fish reminded me how fresh ocean food should taste.

2.Bistro' 22: A quiet surprise by the harbor
This one didn’t try too hard—and that’s what made it special. The sole fish was buttery and bright, the wine list small but thoughtful. It’s the kind of place where you end up lingering longer than planned.

3.Tas-k: Tiny spot, big flavor near the black sand
Tucked near the beach, this little local spot opened at dusk and filled up fast. Their roasted cheese and beef were humble but deeply satisfying. This is the kind of dinner you remember for being exactly what you needed.

4.De Carlos Bar: Where the locals go for fried fish
We nearly missed this one. It looks like any other neighborhood bar—until you try the fried fish. Golden, crispy, and not greasy at all. It felt like someone’s grandma was back in the kitchen.

5.Agua y Sal: Classic seafood, done right
Popular with locals and actors alike, this place is always buzzing. The grilled seafood and prawns were next-level. Their river crab was unexpectedly spicy, in the best way. Don’t skip this one.

Before You Go:
If you plan to eat your way around Tenerife like I did, you’ll want something that grows with your appetite. This expandable backpack made it easier to travel light, then make room for everything that came home with me.
