The Toughest Hike I’ve Done in Germany (But Also the Most Worth It)
Share
If you're looking for a challenging hiking route in Germany, Soiernsee in the south is one to consider. I’ve been there twice and walked two different trails. Both were tough, but the payoff made it worthwhile.
Start by taking the train (DB) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Kochel, then transfer to bus 9608. I used the Komoot app to follow the trail maps

🥾 Route 1: Isarhorn to Schöttelkarsptize Loop
· Start point: Isarhorn (arrive via 9608 bus)
· Total time: ~9 hours round trip
· Conditions: Extremely steep and technical; parts include 60-degree rock scrambles and black trail segments (expert level)
· Format: Up and down loop, no water or food stops along the way
· Key point: Final ascent to Schöttelkarsptize, where the 8-shaped lake appears below
· Suggested timing:
· 09:13 departs from Murnau Hb
· 11:14 hiking starts
· Last 9608 return: 21:46
· Arrival back in Murnau: 00:26

The trail involves 4 major climbs and constant up-and-down terrain. It’s physically demanding, with no shelter or vendors en route. Bring enough water (minimum 1.5L) and food. I carried everything in a waterproof backpack for hiking, just large enough (around 20L) to keep me mobile without overloading.

🥾 Route 2: Alpenhof – Soiernhaus – Return Loop
· Start point: Alpenhof via 9608 bus
· Trail: Fischbachalm – Soiernhaus – extend optionally to Schöttelkarsptize
· Total time: ~28km
· Trail grade: Moderate to hard
· Mostly wide gravel trails
· Final 30-minute section includes red trail (difficult)
· Facilities: Wooden hut mid-way for food and toilets
· Suggested timing:
· 07:59 departs from Murnau Hb
· 22:26 return to Murnau

Compared to Route 1, this loop is more forgiving. Fewer steep climbs, more structured trail. Still a long day, but manageable if you're prepared. Personally, I found this one more balanced—still a full-body effort, but with breaks and a place to refill.
What to Pack
· At least 1.5L of water
· Full meal or energy food (Route 1 has no access to supplies)
· Hiking poles (2 preferred)
· Windproof layers and sun protection
· A waterproof backpack for hiking, 20L size is ideal for balancing load and movement

These aren’t easy hikes. You’ll sweat through your clothes. Route 1 isn’t suitable for beginners at all. But if you’ve got the stamina and gear, this part of southern Germany rewards you—quietly, but clearly.
